Tourism of the future

I find inspiration for my thoughts today from a statement by Carlo Petrini that I found, accidentally, in one of my many explorations on the web. The phrase cited by the famous gastronome, journalist and Italian writer says this: “The future of tourism? Start of the residents, their quality of life, the ability to be happy, from their care to the land they inhabit. Tourists will come as a result”.

As ever these days, here in Trentino, we talk about reforms with regard to the provincial tourism sector: a reasoning necessary, considering that public resources are falling sharply and that most of the actors devoted to the promotion of tourism in Trentino are supported by government grants. I am deeply convinced that one of the possible solutions for an optimal re-organization of the provincial tourism system is precisely to reformulate everything from the bottom up, as Petrini says.

Residents are the first people to be the main actors of this re-definition: it is their activism, their culture , their care to the territory in which they live, today, that can make the difference . Obviously we want the facilities, we want companies that are promoting, we need technical experts in the field , there is no doubt, but at the same time we should recognize, reinforce and also qualify the work of active citizens, that in Trentino are usually involved in those association that are called Pro Loco. Theirs is NOT a marginal role, is a complementary role, it must be acknowledged!

I’m just back from the organization of a Living Nativity Scene in Calavino, my village, thanks to the collaboration of nearly forty people (ten of which can be considered real workers – artisans, not volunteers). This event would not be the same if someone forced them to do it. Without love, passion, dedication, attention to details and, we would not be able to bring those 1,500 tourists (whether their guests, villagers and tourists) that usually come to visit the Living Nativity Scene in Calavino.

In times of crisis we can find the strength to start where there has always been: from the volunteers who do so much and ask little, just for the love of their country, of their own city, its territory, from those people that make it tourist friendly and charming without even realizing it.

Turismo del futuro: ripartire dal basso

Trovo spunto per il mio pensiero di oggi da una frase di Carlo Petrini in cui mi sono imbattuto, casualmente, in una delle mie tante esplorazioni sul web. La frase, citata dal famosissimo gastronomo, giornalista e scrittore italiano recita questo: “Il turismo del futuro? Parte dai cittadini residenti, dalla loro qualità della vita, dalla capacità di essere felici, dalla loro cura verso la terra che abitano. I turisti arriveranno di conseguenza”. Mai come in questi giorni, qui in Trentino, si parla di riforme per quanto concerne il settore turistico provinciale: un ragionamento necessario, visto che le risorse pubbliche sono in forte calo e visto che la maggior parte degli attori votati alla promozione turistica del Trentino sono sostenuti da contributi pubblici. Sono profondamente convinto che una delle possibili soluzioni per un riassetto ottimale del sistema turistico provinciale sia proprio quello di riformulare il tutto partendo dal basso; come afferma Petrini, sono per primi i cittadini ad essere gli attori principali di questa nuova ridefinizione, è il loro attivismo, la loro cultura, la loro cura verso il territorio in cui abitano che, oggi, può fare la differenza. Ovviamente ci vogliono le strutture, ci vogliono le aziende che fanno la promozione, ci voglioni i tecnici esperti nel settore, non v’è alcun dubbio, ma parallelamente a questi va riconosciuto, rinforzato e qualificato anche il lavoro dei cittadini attivi che, per quanto riguarda il territorio trentino ed il settore turistico, operano nelle molte associazioni Pro Loco presenti. Il loro NON è un ruolo marginale, è un ruolo complementare, questo deve essere riconosciuto una volta per tutte!

Sono reduce dall’organizzazione di un Prespe Vivente, fatto nel mio paese Calavino, grazie alla collaborazione di quasi una quarantina di persone (dieci delle quali sono da considerae veri e proprio lavoratori-artigiani, non volontari). Questa manifestazione non sarebbe la stessa se qualcuno ci costringesse a farla: non ci metteremmo amore, passione, dedizione, cura dei minimi dettagli e, in definitiva, non riusciremmo a portare ogni anno (da venti anni a questa parte) quei 1.500 turisti (siano essi ospiti, valligiani o turisti veri) che solitamente  vengono a visitare il Presepe Vivente di Calavino.

Concludo allora dicendo che, in tempi di crisi, la forza per ricominciare la possiamo trovare là dove c’è sempre stata, ripartendo dal basso, da quei volontari che tanto fanno e poco chiedono, semplicemente per l’amore del proprio paese, della propria città, del proprio territorio che in definitiva rendono turisticamente accogliente e grazioso senza nemmeno accorgersene.
